Movies becoming Broadway musicals—it’s not just for Disney films anymore! Turns out, it’s also for ’80s live-action comedies. It happened with Hairspray in 2002, and six years later, it happened with 9 to 5, based on the 1980 film starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton (which, in turn, inspired the Parton hit single “9 to 5”). The 9 to 5 musical, with music and lyrics by Parton, played on Broadway for five months in 2009, and now the touring version—with American Idol alum Diana DeGarmo in Parton’s role of Doralee—is coming to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts for a six-night stint. Fans of ladies getting workplace revenge on their overbearing male boss: You now have a reason to tumble out of bed and stumble to the theater.
