More About

As one of the fathers of the “Bakersfield Sound”—a late-1960s reaction to the overproduced honky-tonk of the “Nashville Sound”—Merle Haggard’s rough-edged twangs and harmonies characterized the outlaw country movement. Affectionately known as “The Hag,” he has had 40 No. 1 hits, and his 1969 self-penned political portrait, “Okie From Muscogee,” a reaction to anti-Vietnam protestors who took potshots at returning soldiers, served as an anthem for the mainstream working class. Haggard has been on his current tour since 2009, and he clearly isn’t running out of steam any time soon, but you’d still be wise to catch this musical icon when he rolls through town—because not even the most unruly hag rolls forever.
