The Raveonettes

The Glass House

The Raveonettes have what you might call a “thing,” or possibly an “equation,” which traditionally has made Suicide, the Shangri-Las and Kenneth Anger’s Scorpio Rising add up to basically the middle span of the Jesus and Mary Chain. Which is this: cave-beat drums, guitars like fog, lyrics about the wild side of life. But the Raveonettes’ new album, Raven In the Grave, is something of a step sideways, trading the ’60s-gone-’90s shoegaze sound for synth/punk and a wave somewhere between cold and minimal. “Recharge and Revolt” literalizes the transition—it starts like a rocker and slips into a dazed, lie-back-and-love-it synth line—and first single “Forget That You’re Young” flips out a chunk of that equation for the Cure.
