New Orleans-raised rapper Curren$y—currently on deck with freebie-mixtape-turned-legit-album Covert Coup—is a real child of the ’80s; his lyrics bulge with as many references to cartoons as to his much-loved cannabis. Turbo Teen, G.I. Joe, Kid ’n Play, MC Hammer—”That shit saved my life!” he told LA Weekly last fall while hours away from performing at High Times’ Cannabis Cup. Cobra Kai (from Karate Kid) and Cobra commandos get shout-outs on Coup, but don’t think kitsch is where Curren$y settles; like Spielberg and Stephen King, he just wants to make sure all his stories have expert set-dressing.
