Backhausdance: Incandescent

Irvine Barclay Theatre

If anyone warrants an artistic company named after them, it’s Chapman University alumna Jennifer Backhaus, whose 11-year-old contemporary-dance troupe was recently named one of North America’s seven emerging dance groups. Six Backhausdance members and six apprentices, accompanied by 20 dancers from Chapman and UC Irvine, perform in Backhaus’ latest piece, Incandescent, inspired by a lowly light bulb and its metaphorical connection to a person’s inner creative light. “This piece is about light in both a literal and figurative sense,” Backhaus said in a press release. “As the dancers are illuminated by various incandescent sources, you see them awaken to discover the light within their souls. Incandescent explores the idea that each of us has a ‘light’ to bring to the world. When we own that light and let it shine, we unconsciously give others the permission to do the same.”
