Record Store Day 2011 (a.k.a. Saturday, April 16) just keeps getting cooler: Foo Fighters will perform an in-store show at Fingerprints in Long Beach! "I'm proud to be a part of Record Store Day. I grew up discovering music that changed my life in record stores like Fingerprints and will always do everything I can to keep that experience alive for generations to come," says head Foo Dave Grohl.
Fingerprints owner Rand Foster is stoked, too. "Record Store Day has quickly become both an annual celebration of the indie-record-store culture and a day to revel in the glory of unique physical goods," he says. Fingerprints will also be releasing a special, limited-edition, vinyl-only copy of Medium Rare, the Foo Fighters' collection of classic cover tunes. A limited number of wristbands were available with the pre-order of Wasting Light (the band's upcoming seventh studio album, to be released on April 12). ANDREW W.K. AT UCI
This is not a joke: A "motivational performance" by Andrew Fetterly Wilkes Krier at UC Irvine, with a focus on both spoken-word presentations and music, might not sound like the most exciting way to spend your evening on April 22. Except this is, in fact, Andrew W.K., the man who turned the concept of partying hard into the song "Party Hard"—and much, much more. HONEYPIE'S DETROIT BAR RESIDENCY
Beginning April 11, Honeypie (one word), whose infectiously catchy vintage pop hooks are belted out by 27-year-old Trisha Smith, take on the Monday-night residency at Detroit Bar. Here are a few choice words from the group.
Smith on studying music: "I was actually majoring in music. I went to OCC and was taking all the prerequisites and getting ready to transfer as a music major, and realized I wanted to do music for fun because I love just performing and having fun with it more than studying it."
On writing songs with Justin Suitor from Railroad to Alaska: "We definitely admire [Suitor's] writing abilities and his talent. I think it's really cool when somebody can write in different styles."
