Demographically, a community college in Mission Viejo may not seem to be the most natural choice to stage a musical about the forbidden romance between a Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier. But this is nothing too radical—it’s Aida, specifically the Elton John/Tim Rice musical based on the 1871 Verdi opera of the same name. That’s the same musical team who put together The Lion King, and like that cartoon classic, this version of Aida started as a Disney production, too. (And the original Broadway run, which debuted in 2000, featured actors such as Michelle Williams and Mickey Dolenz at one point or another.) So yeah, pretty much a perfect choice for a Saddleback College performance—even without the considerable star power of a Destiny’s Child or Monkee.
