It's refreshing when we come across a rap artist both underground and long-lived. On the rarity scale, Talib Kweli is a gem. Getting his start with rapper Mos Def in the late-'90s act Black Star, Kweli has maintained a relatively low profile for a hip-hop recording artist, with 10 albums to his credit. He has a lyrical style that's best described as "earnest," infusing social commentary into his songs without coming across as strident. His sound is lushwith piano, string and brass samples and booming drum breaks backing smooth, quick-clipped rhyming.
