The fact that Ice Cube—a former N.W.A member whose lyrical turns of phrase include “It feels like I’m bustin’ a nut when I open you up”—has seen a complete career reinvention as an actor, with his greatest success in family-friendly fare such as Are We There Yet? Subsequent follow-ups aren’t so surprising. What possibly is surprising is he’s still putting out rap at a regular pace, just a few months ago releasing his ninth studio album, I Am the West. And it’s still hardcore, with Cube delivering the line (in lead single “Drink the Kool-Aid”) “Do you know who you’re fuckin’ with?” with suitable credibility—even if the answer to that is “the star of The Longshots.”
