Letters From OC Weekly Readers

SIZE MATTERS
Nothing like surfing some big waves [Chasen Marshall's "Swell Guys," Feb. 18]. Really wish we had more big-wave spots here on the West Coast. We can get a nice-sized one once in a while and decent shape, but it's not all that consistent.

Awesome storytelling.

Enjoyed this article. That guy's tube from the Rosarito Beach session should have been on Surfline. The Gerr one was sick. Keep charging, boys.

PARENTAL GUIDANCE IS COURT-ORDERED
I wonder if Judge William W. Bedsworth would feel the same if the adult were male and the minor female [R. Scott Moxley's Moxley Confidential, "The Mother, Her Teen Lover and Their Baby," Feb. 18].

Bruce6053, via ocweekly.com

@Bruce6053: If it were a male adult and female victim, the adult would be in prison, and the child would be with the female victim's family. Bedsworth is obviously thinking with his extracranial male "brain." If he were thinking with his intracranial brain, he would realize that a child should not be placed with a rapist, male or female.

@Kuewa: In the justice system, each case is specific and stands alone and no two are the same. It seems to me the issue here is the welfare of the baby. Granting custody of a baby to a teen who can't even take care of himself, much less a child, is faulty logic. On the other hand, the evidence was there that the mother and her husband were more than able to raise the child. It was a good decision by the court. Both the teen father and the child will be better off in the long run.

COMING CLEAN?
I am sorry for the Files family [Nick Schou's "Dying Inside," Feb. 11]. However, I can't help but think to myself, "Would he have ever gotten clean?" Probably not. He would have died sooner or later from drugs and alcohol—addicts usually do. Thank goodness he didn't take anyone else out with him at the same time.

Everybody else's fault but the junkie's. Riiight.

As much as I dislike what I see as the OC Weekly's pro-homosexual, pro-illegal-alien, pro-drug stance, I'm glad they report on the status of the OC jail. There are a lot of cruddy things that go on in there—and sometimes to good people who are in there on the smallest of charges. Sometimes, I think they are the only ones that care enough to do so.

It's heartbreaking to lose someone to addiction. I lost my brother nine months ago, and it hasn't gotten any easier. My heart goes out to you, Brooke.

DELIVER US
This story grosses me out in many ways, mostly because childbirth is such a natural process (only 10 percent of births need medical intervention) that most of these cases could have been prevented, and second because I know and have even referred many low-income mothers to La Cigüena clinic [Gustavo Arellano's "Births and Deaths," Feb. 4]. If you are a mother or know someone who is delivering in the near future, please, please consider getting a midwife instead of a family physician or OB/GYN, even if you have Medi-Cal. Conventional doctors are taught to do medical procedures, while midwives are taught the natural process of birth but are still qualified to do medical interventions only when necessary. It is difficult for us to fight the complex dynamics of the Medical Board, but we have much energy and every right to teach our community about empowerment.

Thanks for this story. We need to get it out to anyone who might go to this doctor or a doctor like him.

CORRECTION
In an article about Gang of Four, bassist Dave Allen was misidentified as Dave Andrews [Jeff Stratton's "Leeds Lads Live!" Feb. 18]. The Weekly regrets the error.
