The Who's Tommy

Segerstrom Center for the Arts

Pete Townshend—a legend for his career as the guitarist and songwriter for the Who—took the iconic band’s 1969 double album, Tommy, and created the aptly named rock musical we all know today. It’s a story of “hope, healing and the human spirit” through a “young boy’s journey from pain to triumph,” according to Townsend’s notes, and it’s set to the songs of the Grammy Hall of Fame-inducted rock-opera album. Since the musical’s San Diego debut in 1992, The Who’s Tommy has won a handful of coveted Tony awards, including Best Score and Best Choreography. The performance makes a stop in Costa Mesa this week, where you can surely expect a night of epic rock & roll—but no “Armenia In the Sky,” alas.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 2 p.m.; Sundays, 1 p.m. Starts: Feb. 10. Continues through Feb. 20, 2011
