Before MMA and Ultimate Fighting swept the nation, the big thing was boxing. Two men akin to modern-day gladiators would take to the ring, clad in nothing but shorts and padded gloves, for the sole purpose of beating the living tar out of each other using only their fists. In 1976, the film Rocky—starring the former Mr. Janice Dickenson himself, Sylvester Stallone—told the rags-to-riches tale of a small-time Philadelphia boxer getting the chance to fight the heavyweight champ. It was just the right mix of the American Dream, killer songs and shots of hunky man-meat to win the Academy Award that year.
