This group cracked the 20-year mark a few years back, putting them closer to Bob Wills territory than Elvis Presley territory, but that’s all the better for fans of a band about to officially become an institution. The Big S came from rockabilly, but he’s an expert now at just about all kinds of Americana, tipping his wings at everybody from Buck Owens to Carl Perkins to maybe even Desmond Dekker, who might not appear in Sandy’s sound but who holds a special place in Sandy’s spirit. Once, Sandy and the boys stepped off their tour bus so perfectly kitted out in vintage style that a watching little kid asked, “Are you from the past?” Well, sort of—but mostly they’re just from somewhere pure.
