The Laramie Project

Grand Central Theatre

The now-legendary performance/play/community consciousness-raising project about the murder of Matthew Shepard reminds us that we, too, are players, in history and society. In this moving, multivoiced dramatic civics lesson and collective gestalt, it is impossible not to see one’s self in the bicyclist who found the brutalized young gay man’s body or in a Laramie, Wyoming, rancher, university professor, sheriff or lesbian waitress—or even that crazy-ass Baptist minister who shows up in the play (as in real life) to hold his evil signs spouting hatred. The play is journalism meets testimonial: cold facts and human emotions trying to catch up with them—as in life, perhaps—as everybody struggles to understand how it could happen in their town and yet knowing exactly how.
