'Boxing Gym' Packs a Punch

The beauty and rhythm of the fight in Frederick Wisemano's knockout doc

The blows may be padded, but the beat never stops. As Sam Fuller once said of the scene in Pickup On South Street in which Richard Widmark yanks the fleeing heavy down a flight of subway stairs by his ankles so that his chin hits every step: “Dat-dat-dat-dat! It’s musical.”

Boxing Gym was directed by Frederick Wiseman. Not rated. Select theaters.
