No one really gets the chance to live like Jimmy Buffett anymore: jumping trains with a bottle of Wild Turkey alongside Jerry Jeff Walker, taking Navy survival training to fly in an F-14 and cameoing in Alex Cox’s Repo Man. Maybe only someone like Kanye West or Katy Perry could summon up this kind of boundary-less ridiculousness now, which was much more possible in the olden times when wages were better and so Kris Kristofferson could land a helicopter on Johnny Cash’s front lawn. (Buffett’s also one of, like, six people to hit #1 on the Fiction and Non-Fiction best-seller lists—alongside Hemingway and Glenn Beck. He does it all, no matter what!) Yes, he’s one of the highest-grossing performers ever, but is he a pirate, too? Well, he’s definitely something.
