How close was Tom Petty to being Elliott Murphy or Dwight Twilley or even Chris Stamey? They were all nowheresville kids who got their expected aspirations set cockeyed after hearing what electricity could do to a guitarand all with at least a finger making contact with power-pop perfection, even if they all ended up in different spots. Petty you know; he roared past ol buddy and labelmate Twilley into million-selling security with songs that put some Doug Sahm aw-shucks-ism into Bruce Springsteen car-washin rock, and thats music that will work as long as a car needs to get washed on a weekend. But maybe you should check those other guys, too. Theyve got choruses and twang a little bit the same.
