The Greatest Year in Film: 1939

Bowers Museum

The film history of 1939 looks like one of those top-of-the-pops charts people will sometimes dig up from late ‘60s just so us degraded future humans can marvel at classic after classic stacked up next to each other. In the twelve golden-est months Hollywood’s golden era arguably ever had, studios delivered Gone With The Wind, Ninotchka, The Wizard Of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, Love Affair, Stagecoach, Gunga Din, and Goodbye Mr. Chips—and those are just the ones the Academy or the box office immediately noticed. Lecturer Dr. Michael Berlin (UCI’s “Sneak Previews with Michael Berlin”) walks you through the world the way it was.
