Poltergeist

Bay Theater

After being given repeated nervous breakdowns by the horror films of the ‘70s, in 1982, audiences were treated to the hippest and most contemporary ghost film ever made—and one in which no one has to die to top you out of your socks. Instead of decapitations and stabbings, the coolest parents on the planet (Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams) contend with the kidnapping-by-television of their tow-headed angel, Carol Ann, a heap-load of unhappy corpses buried beneath their pool, a gelatinous other-worldly way-station for confused souls, Satan, and one sassy, badass mini-medium. Go hoot and holler from beginning to end with this classic gem—except for when the clown doll comes onscreen and you’re stunned into a shrieking, freaking, silence.
Sun., Aug. 29, 6 p.m.; Mon., Aug. 30, 8 p.m.; Wed., Sept. 1, 8 p.m., 2010
