Havana's Tropicana Club was the kind of golden-age-of-everything nightspot they couldn't make again if they tried—hangout and home to expats from Hemingway to Piaf to mobster Meyer Lansky. But it's also a premier example of Cuba's modernist architecture, with prize-winning designs by Max Borges, Jr., whose grand take on the international style gifted the country with some of its most distinctive and beloved buildings. Author Rosa Lowinger—whose recent Tropicana Nights: The Life and Times of the Legendary Cuban Nightclub chronicles this intersection of art and architecture—will lecture on a historical moment possibly matched only by Berlin and Paris between the wars. Free Cuban coffee and special Cuban cafe menu, too.
