Bridging the gap between hippies and hillbillies is a sacred art for the Yonder Mountain String Band. Washing their Dead Head influences down with a swig of moonshine, this nimble-fingered foursome continue on a 12-year binge of genre-bending bluegrass experimentation from their high-altitude home of Nederland, Colorado. What’s emerged is a sound that stomps, shreds and plays by it’s own rules using an amalgam of organic instrumentation and progressive jam band sensibilities. Judging by the success of their 2009 full-length, The Show—a number one hit on the US Blue Grass charts—YMSB is enjoying their own mountain of creative prosperity. This week, the band turns Anaheim’s House of Blues into the House of Bluegrass with a sound, style and energy that never fails to pluck shit up.
