The Violet Hour

Long Beach Playhouse

If you’ve ever spent time with someone who studied philosophy in college, you’re probably no stranger to smug pretention. But here’s a secret those highfalutin’ Socratic wannabes don’t want you to know: after hours of going bleary-eyed pouring over the tomes of Immanuel Kant and Jacques Derrida, even the most rigorous logician enjoys some simple philosophical entertainment. The Long Beach Playhouse understands this, and in the grand tradition of Nietzschean existentialism, the theater will be presenting its production of The Violet Hour . Penned by Richard Greenberg and directed by Sharyn Case, the dramatic comedy examines questions of fate and whether knowing one’s destiny has any effect on the outcome. Yes it’s some heavy shit, but laughter will be thrown into the mix. So all of you cerebral types can keep thinking, just not so hard.
Fridays-Sundays, 2 & 8 p.m. Starts: July 3. Continues through Aug. 7, 2010
