If youve ever spent time with someone who studied philosophy in college, youre probably no stranger to smug pretention. But heres a secret those highfalutin Socratic wannabes dont want you to know: after hours of going bleary-eyed pouring over the tomes of Immanuel Kant and Jacques Derrida, even the most rigorous logician enjoys some simple philosophical entertainment. The Long Beach Playhouse understands this, and in the grand tradition of Nietzschean existentialism, the theater will be presenting its production of The Violet Hour . Penned by Richard Greenberg and directed by Sharyn Case, the dramatic comedy examines questions of fate and whether knowing ones destiny has any effect on the outcome. Yes its some heavy shit, but laughter will be thrown into the mix. So all of you cerebral types can keep thinking, just not so hard.
Fridays-Sundays, 2 & 8 p.m. Starts: July 3. Continues through Aug. 7, 2010
