Hey OC Weekly, Could you check the comments? I hate those fucking Chinese spinoff companies trying to get free advertising as comments.
I got tired of them in Voice of OC, so I reported their spinoffs to Nike USA, Gucci etc. They are going after them.

I have the solution! Since both legalized Mexicans and legalized US citizens in Mexico starting this year will receive dual passports, why don´t we do like an exchange? I MX citizen for 1 USA citizen?
Thinking about resources it probably would be more fair to do 1 MX for 2 USA -- have to develop criteria dep. on income, education, child bearing etc... but Mexicans like most USA and 1st world people will stop having so many kids if they are mid class status, and most US citizens who want to move to MX are rich, upper middle class or artists. A first step towards a true new hemisphere - BUT Mexico has to allow us to conduct businesses etc. w/o harrassment that we get now as foreigners .--- See Gustavo I think Calderon has to be part of the exercise, part of the honesty and the debate.
This stuff with phony weddings has gone on for years, but as above commentators note is less effective today. In 1970´s a woman was paid like $5K to do the fraud, now its more like $25K but that does not keep up with inflation and still can f-up his/her credit rating and life forever.

Gustavo,
You have played fast and loose with the facts and it is disappointing as it paints a distorted picture for the KnowNothings.
1) Nobody gets married and "a week later" has an interview with USCIS. You get married, file your I-130, and then, about six months later, after fingerprints and FBI background checks are cleared, you get an interview.
2) You left it ambiguous but if the non-citizen in your scenario did not cross the border lawfully (border crosser card, tourist visa, etc.) when he/she left Mexico as a 13 year old, he/she will not be leaving the USCIS interview except in handcuffs. People who are not eligible to adjust status in the US must do so in the home country. The only interview letter s/he will be getting will be the old "come to the USCIS office to discuss an immigration matter" letter that typically leads to the individual being detained.
Yes, the US immigration "system" is counter-productive and stupid. There is no need to embellish the stupidity.
Are there false marriages for immigration purposes? Of course. Are they available to folks who came into the country without permission? Nope.

Thank you so much for sharing these stories w/ the rest of the world. I know too many people who are stuck behind the wall of paperwork and penalties that our government has erected in its xenophobic mania, it's truly sickening. I'm glad there's a way out for some. I hope, soon, there's a way out of the mess for all.

Over a Million Indians are arriving in the US on a Tourist Visa with the wife 7 to 8 months pregent! (Anchor Babies)
Millions and millions of Anchor Babies.
Guess What: There are already over 65 to 70 Million Illegal Indians in US, over 150,000 arrives per month by the way of H-1B, L1, J1 plus the Tourist visas and all of them NEVER EVER Leave.

This article has a fatal flaw, which makes it rather pathetic and pointless. If you're an undocumented alien, marrying a U.S. citizen doesn't make it any easier to get a green card. Twenty years ago, it might have helped. Possibly ten years ago. But not now, and not for the past several years.
So this is basically sensationalist, anti-immigrant nonsense.

"You as a 'journalist' and editor should know the difference between anti-immigrant fervor and anti-illegal immigration fervor."
He does...its part of the theatrics. The good thing is that his knack for fair, accurate, unbiased, professional 'journalism' has the folks over at Fox News drooling.
Watch out Gustavo! They're knocking at your door.
He 'reports'...you decide.

Gustovo,
congratulations! You have drawn the ire of one of the OC's wackiest of neoclown wackjobs. None other than Long Beach City College Assoc. Prof. Donald Douglas, author of the American Power hate blog, has called you out for confirming racist stereotypes about Latinos.
http://americanpowerblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/hey-ask-mexican-whats-little-marriage.html
No worries. A few minutes perusing the other wacky rantings and extremist teabagger graphics at americanpowerblog.blogspot.com will make it quite evident that Douglas is a mental defective. To be attacked by such a clown is a mark of distinction.

I wonder why so many posters hide behind screen names, particularly those who really have nothing to add. With that said, I recall being asked in the mid 1980s about possibly marrying a Chinese girl so that she could migrate to the US. Though I wasn't an attorney at the time I did ask whether it was legal and was assured it was. Since I was in my early 20s the next question was, "what does she look like" and the response ended any possiblity I'd participate (even though it sounded like an interesting way to make a few grand). The response - "I don't know." Apparently it boiled down to whoever was next in line, I didn't know if we were talking Lucy Liu, Kelly Hu or someone who could walk out in daylight and stop a clock. I suppose it was somewhat superficial a response but since the deal, at that time, required the marriage last at least 2 years I wanted to make sure they wouldn't seem like 2 decades.
As to all the noise about "legally" and "the law" it continues to astound me that the bigots and racists literally know nothing of the history of the "Southwest" but here's a hint for those who are capable of rational thought - this IS the Old County!!!! The fact it was literally taken from Mexico by force doesn't change that one iota.
-
Chipera 07/10/2010 10:49:00 AM
Is it really that easy?!?! I mean, REALLY?! I was in a REAL marriage, and had a child with my hubby... But it was made very difficult for us and he still hasn't been able to obtain his full residency/citizenship!
-
american 07/09/2010 11:01:00 PM
Interesting story about some felons.
Note to teh Editor: Your 'Editor's Note' shown with this story gets something very confused...
Many in this nation are against Illegal Immigration... But you say there is anti-immigrant fervor throughout our nation.
You, as a journalist and editor, should know the difference between anti-immigrant fervor, and anti-illegal immigration fervor.
I, for one, don't care what country you come from, just so long as you come here while obeying our laws... Just like my grandparents did.
So, everyone has to wait in line just like the rest of us.
-
OC curtain 07/09/2010 9:19:00 PM
Just another felony, like so many of their friends, just another criminal act by low lifes.
"just another felony", but with the absence of good jobs, robbing a bank seemed to make sense.
You are so fucking stupid it proves the theory over and over.

RobE 07/09/2010 10:27:00 AM
There's a Dominican pitcher for the Chunichi Dragons, Maximo Nelson, who was a farmhand with the Yankees a few years ago when he got caught up in a fake marriage scam. The feds banned him from the U.S., which ended his shot at MLB.
And Nelson's career with Chunichi is going to end soon unless he starts performing better (6.30 ERA and a .395 batting average against at the moment).
-
Howard Be My Name 07/09/2010 8:02:00 AM
Wonderful article, Gustavo. I'd like to read more of these kinds of stories and hope you will continue.
I think it's great that the fake marriage crackdown landed a bunch of Viets. I get so tired of hearing from the Viet racists who seem to think no Viet ever arrived here illegally, yet every Mexican did.
One question: Could the series be titled "Among Us" instead of "Amongst Us?" "Amongst" sounds so affected!
-
OldDunc 07/09/2010 7:03:00 AM
sweetpea, a society with lawlessness is a country that invades other countries and slaughters their citizens by the thousands. The US is in no position to get all pissy about law.

Gustavo, I see right through you using the name Jose to cover for yourself but why wasn't I invited to the wedding? I thought we were lovers!
-
sweetpea 07/09/2010 4:10:00 AM
Gustavo, you are a racist.
Pull your girly emotions from your bleeding heart and realize that breaking a law is a slippery slope, and when you condone breaking one, you condone lawlessness. A society with lawlessness is Santa Ana, aka a shithole.
