Pato Banton

Glass House

Reggae singer Pato Banton spent everything he had finishing his landmark 1987 album Never Give In. He jettisoned food, shelter and utilities for studio time and just barely made it alive through what would become—in part through a lucky break at KROQ—his definitive release. (If you didn’t hear the real thing, you did hear the Beastie Boys’ sample of “Don’t Sniff Coke” on Paul’s Boutique.) Banton had a Grammy near-miss in 2001 but remains a proven and prolific writer, recording and releasing his last album Destination Paradise in Torrance—a first step abroad for an artist who spent his almost thirty-year career in studios overseas.
