Gustavo's Poetry Corner

[¡Ask a Mexican!] You might not be a pinche racist if . . .

DEAR READERS: Arizona’s pendejos have emboldened hundreds of Know Nothings in the past week to boast to the Mexican that they’re not racist if they support Senate Bill 1070 because, according to them, they believe in the law and they have no problems with immigrants so long as they’re legal. Nosotros los buenos know that argument is almost always demonstrably false, that Americans were bashing swarthy Sicilians even after the immigration officer at Ellis Island signed them through and shortened their name from Favaloro to Faber.

But I feel magnanimous this week. Maybe it’s the pre-Fourth of July Herradura before me, but I’ll indulge the anti-racist protestations of Know Nothings with a test. If—with (profuse) apologies to Rudyard Kipling—if . . .

If you can keep your cabeza when all about you

Is banda and mariachi blaring near you;

If you can see six Mexi kids and their pregnant mom in front of you,

But make allowance for their tough times, too;

If you can wait in the emergency room and not be angered by waiting,

Or, being lied to about a rooster in the back yard, not report to Animal Control those lies,

Or, being hated by Mexican soccer fans, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good in a sombrero nor talk like Glenn Beck, who isn’t too wise;

If you can dream of Ozzie and Harriet America—and not make sueños your master;

If you can think about cars parked on front lawns—without those thoughts causing you pain,

If you can meet with an Aztlanista and an Arizonan disaster

And treat those two babosos just the same:

If you can bear to hear the truth about Mexican assimilation others have spoken

Twisted no longer by pendejos to make a trap for fools,

Or watch our border, broken,

And stoop and build it up with humane tools;

If you can pool your lifetime winnings

And risk it on a business in a barrio where soccer balls get a toss,

And lose and start again at your beginnings

And never blame illegals about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nervios and sinew

To not sell your home long after your white neighbors are gone,

And so hold on when the only English speaker is you

Except for those pochos who say to usted: “Hold pinche on”;

If you can talk with Mexican crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with ICE—nor lose the ability to allow a DREAM Act student’s story to touch;

If neither George Lopez nor “press one for English, two for Spanish” can hurt you;

If truly bigoted relatives count with you, but none too much;

If your local pool gets disturbed every minute

With 60 Mexicans in jeans—and you don’t make them run—

You’re not a racist and truly about laws,

And—which is more—you’re a chingón, cabrón!

    Gustavo, Just curious not trying to talk trash at all, however, what do you think about the fact that entering the country without the proper paperwork or whatever is illegal? You can email me directly as I may not have time to check for your response here. Thank you. In case you were wondering why I ask it is for school.

    With a known admission by Gustavo that his own father illegally entered the United States, I guess we should expect an objective viewpoint from him regarding illegal immigration in the same manner that we should expect an objective viewpoint of capitalism from Karl Marx.

    Valeria: I don't always do so! Joe, Sarah, y CB: Gracias! Peckerwood: Your spelling is atrocious, and worse than that of any Mexican I know! Attencion: FUNNY... Be Strong Wood: I'am guessing you are a veteran by your remarks in your last sentence. I myself served four wonderful years in the United States Marine Corps with a majority of those years being oversea. So I have one guestion for you; WTF does being a Veteran have to do with this article? If you are upset with what Gustravo is saying then please state that you will get tire of his shit. If you are a Veteran, which is still unkown, why do you feel it is necessary to bring up your veteran status in an irrelavent topic. I know for myself I did not join the service so I can one up others during a discussion of differances. One last thing, If you are not a veteran please do not speak on our behalf. I would never tell Gustravo to becareful because someday the Los Angeles Doyers are going to get tire of your shit. Semper Fi.

    The problem here is in saying that supporting legal immigrants while not supporting illegal immigrants can be shown to be "demonstrably false" and then using an anecdotal example from some 80 years ago to demonstrate that premise. Legal immigrants from around the world are critical to the Tech Industry, the Health Industry, and many others. These are generally well educated individuals from diverse backgrounds that go through a rigorous and lengthy process to become American Citizens. This is a very consistent process with that of many other countries. I have yet to hear anyone, at any time, in the context of this issue, question the legal immigration process. It is disingenuous to continuously try to change the debate by making it about “Immigration” as a whole (in an attempt to make the pro-illegal immigrant position more universal) instead of what it is really about, Illegal Immigration, its unfairness to the legal immigrant, and the resultant cost to society versus the perceived benefit.

    Gustavo: I read your column all time, but did you have an upset stomach when you wrote that stuff? Give me a break, UCLA grad, your better than that. Why don't you write about something really funny, like President Obama's BS speech the other day on immigration. From here until November, maybe you could remind "La Raza" to go out and vote, if you don't vote, you can't complain when we are ignored.

  • Richard 07/03/2010 2:55:00 AM

    Damn - did you have to include George Lopez? I was doing so good.

  • El Goombacho 07/02/2010 11:37:00 PM

    Buon Giorno Gustavo! Come stai? First, I like what you did with Kipling's "If" and I hope you'll do something similar with Ehrmann's "Desiderata". Second, being half Sicilian-Italian, I felt the need to share a relevant story about my maternal and very "...swarthy Sicilian" grandparents. Soon after immigrating to America in 1954, they moved into an apartment, just barely on the L.A. (i.e., Eagle Rock) side of the L.A./Glendale city line. The first day at their place--and as was their custom back in Sicily--my grandparents decided to take a late afternoon/early evening walk around the neighborhood. Unbeknownst to them, they crossed into Glendale, which at the time, had a history of being racist. Within 10 minutes of crossing, a Glendale cop stops them; does a "papers please" job (luckily they had their immigration cards); and questions them as to what business they had being in Glendale. After the cop figured out he was dealing with a couple of dark-skinned "wops", he asks a final (and insulting) question as to whether or not my grandparents were associated with the mafia. The officer forcefully and politely told them to return home, and as my grandparents complied, he followed them in his car, until they had walked back into the L.A. side of the city line.
