“I want more love and more soul and more heart!” wrote Vincent Van Gogh, the Dutch painter too often called a rock star when he should be thought of more as rock hero—the kind of righteous for-the-people artist whose great works went unnoticed but lasted right up until his death by suicide, which he felt was less an end and more a journey. “We take death to go to a star,” he wrote. “To die quietly of old age would be to go there on foot.” The Myth noted in the title of this lecture is probably Vincent the obscure tortured lunatic genius—the Alex Chilton of his day?—but the Man is found between the paintings themselves and the stacks of letters he left behind, which make up what The London Times called “the greatest cache of writing about art left behind by any artist.”
