In 2008, the Love Me Nots released a record called Detroit, helmed by noted Detroit-based producer Jim Diamond, who in the past has worked with the White Stripes (also from Detroit) and the Dirtbombs (yep, Detroit), and full of the type of unrestrained garage rock that you’d expect from, here it comes, Detroit. But the Love Me Nots are actually from Phoenix and despite being more familiar with saguaros than auto manufacturing, they’ve managed to produce three authentically raw records that defy conventional geographical boundaries. Buoyed by the undeniable vocal power of lead singer Nicole Laurenne and backed by drummer Bob Hoag—a former member of the Ataris, as random as that may seem—the quartet explode with endearing energy on tracks like “Do What You Do,” the opening number on their latest full-length, last year’s Upsidedown Insideout.
