Edward II

Empire Theatre

While history made great strides to forget the fact that some of its leaders possessed rather, um, flamboyant characteristics, today’s scholars interpret the clues provided by text a bit differently. In the case of England’s King Edward the II and “his favourites,” three men whom the King relied upon intimately, history now deciphers these special relationships as they very well may have been in reality—based on sex rather than friendship. To push this agenda forward, Orange County’s gay and lesbian theater group, Theatre Out, will present the world premiere of Darcy Hogan’s adaptation of Christopher Marlowe’s play Edward II. First written circa 1592, Edward II chronicles Edward’s rise to the King of England and ultimately his downfall as he begins to favor his lovers over his wife.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: May 28. Continues through June 4, 2010
