Have you ever sat down in front of the TV with an extra large pizza, and by the end of Lost, the entire thing was gone and you’re left stuffed to capacity, breathing heavy like a beached whale on the couch? Right, neither have we. But many Americans have a hard-wired tendency to overeat. Some claim it’s human nature to pack away food while we can—a survival method that dates back to a pre-McDonald’s era. However, Dr. David Kessler believes it’s a little different. Through extensive research (including midnight dumpster diving behind Chili’s restaurants) the former commissioner of the FDA found that the salt-fat-sugar combo so prevalent in today’s ready-made cuisine actually convinces the brain to eat more, even if we don’t need to or want to. Dr. Kessler comes to Newport Beach to speak about this phenomena and what we can do to break the unhealthy—though delicious—cycle.
