Your Liberal rant is in keeping with liberal's half truths about everything they disagree. Too bad you didn't read the 1070 bill. It does not allow Police to stop anyone and check their citizenship. The Police must have a legitimate reason for stopping someone, like for a traffic offense. If the person appears to be an illegal, they could arrest them. How would they appear to be illegal? Buy not having identification! Hey, everyone who is stopped for a traffic offense or any possible infraction of the law is a asked to produce identification. How is that racial profiling? Next, Mr. partial truth Arellano says that Arizona got into trouble for failing to recognize the Martin Luther King holiday. UNTRUE! The Governor called for the holiday to be on Sunday, but the liberals wanted it on Monday. That way state employees could get a day off with pay. What was next for Mr. partial truth Arellano? He called Barry Goldwater a Libertarian. Goldwater was a Republican. So much for Arellano's credibility. Maybe Mr. partial truth Arellano should get his facts straight before trying his hand at writing!

ElLibertador - Greetings from one of the racist scum, you referred to in your tirade against Americans who are fed up supporting your illegal amigos from south of the border. I guess you just didn't know how to play the system to get your freebies but according to the below news article, someone else knows all the angles.
Just One Hospital – How About Others ?
Unbelievable!
Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas , Texas is a fairly famous institution and for a variety of reasons:
1. John F. Kennedy died there in 1963
2. Lee Harvey Oswald died there shortly after
3. Jack Ruby-who killed Oswald, died there a few years later.
On the flip side, Parkland is also home to the second busiest maternity ward in the country with almost 16,000 new babies arriving each year. (That's almost 44 per day---every day)!
A recent patient survey indicated that 70 percent of the women who gave birth at Parkland in the first three months of 2006 were illegal immigrants. That's 11,200 anchor babies born every year just in Dallas!!!
According to the article, the hospital spent $70.7 million delivering 15,938 babies in 2004 but managed to end up with almost $8 million dollars in surplus funding. Medicaid kicked in $34.5 million, Dallas County taxpayers kicked in $31.3 million and the feds tossed in another $9.5 million.
The average patient in Parkland in maternity wards is 25 years old, married and giving birth to her second child. She is also an illegal immigrant. By law, pregnant women cannot be denied medical care based on their immigration status or ability to pay.
OK, fine. That doesn't mean they should receive better care than everyday, middle-class American citizens. But at Parkland Hospital , they do. " Parkland Memorial Hospital has nine prenatal clinics. NINE!!!
The Dallas Morning News article followed a Hispanic woman who was a patient at one of the clinics and pregnant with her third child---her previous two were also born at Parkland. Her first two deliveries were free and the Mexican native was grateful because it would have cost$200 to have them in Mexico. This time, the hospital wants her to pay $10 per visit and $100 for the delivery but she was unsure if she could come up with the money. Not that it matters, the hospital won't turn her away. (I wonder why they even bother asking at this point.)
"How long has this been going on? What are the long-term effects?
Well, another subject of the article was born at Parkland in 1986 shortly after her mother entered the US illegally - now she is having her own child there as well. (That's right; she's technically a US citizen.)
These women receive free prenatal care including medication, nutrition, birthing classes and child care classes. They also get freebies such as car seats, bottles, diapers and formula.
Most of these things are available to American citizens as well, but only for low-income applicants, and even then, the red tape involved is almost insurmountable.
Because these women are illegal immigrants, they do not have to provide any sort of legitimate identification - no proof of income. An American citizen would have to provide a social security number which would reveal their annual income - an illegal immigrant need only claim to be poor and the hospital must take them at their word.
Parkland Hospital offers indigent care to Dallas County residents who earn less than $40,000 per year. (They also have to prove that they did not refuse health coverage at their current job.. Yeah, the 'free' care is not so easy for Americans.)
There are about 140 patients who received roughly $4 million dollars for un-reimbursed medical care. As it turns out, they did not qualify for free treatment because they resided outside of Dallas County so the hospital is going to sue them! Illegal's get it all free! But U. S citizens who live outside of Dallas County get sued! How stupid is this?
As if that isn't annoying enough, the illegal immigrant patients are actually complaining about hospital staff not speaking Spanish. In this AP story, the author speaks with a woman who is upset that she had to translate comments from the hospital staff into Spanish for her husband. The doctor was trying to explain the situation to the family and the mother was forced to translate for her husband who only spoke Spanish.
This was apparently a great injustice to her.
In an attempt to create a Spanish-speaking staff, Parkland Hospital is now providing incentives in the form of extra pay for applicants who speak Spanish.. Additionally, medical students at the University of Texas Southwestern for which Parkland Hospital is the training facility will now have a Spanish language requirement added to their already jammed-packed curriculum. No other school in the country boasts such a ridiculous multi-semester (multicultural) requirement.
Remember that this is about only ONE hospital in Dallas, Texas. There are many more hospitals across our country that must also deal with this.
If you want to verify the accuracy of this information:

I know that you want to boycott some of the Arizona businesses but sosme of those businesses are giving Mexican American jobs and if we boycott those businesses then they might lose their jobs. It is hard as it is right now but sometimes we have to think about the little people that this could possibly hurt. I want something done to because I believe that the law is just an outright attempt at racial profiling but then again we don't want to punish the people who are actually working for these companies. As an African American female I understand that something does need to be done but we need to find an alternative instead. So my question is how do you boycott and not hurt the little people (because the big people wont feel the brunt of the blow as much as "us")???
Thank you
Tif!!!
P.S. I can't wait for your book to come out I learned about you doing a report for my ethics class.

ilegal immigrants do not have access to free american medical care, free education, free food WIC, free housing. First of all... not even citizens have free medical care, so stop perpetuating that myth. The only way to access those benefits are if you are in fact a legal resident or citizen. How do I know? I lived and worked as an undocumented immigrant for 3 years before getting married and becoming a legal resident. I never had access to any of those benefits, yet, I still paid taxes. And by the way... I have a college degree, which means I'm probably better educated and more competent than 80% of the racist/nativist scum that like to make false accusations and generalizations of those who come to the U.S. looking for a better life (whether by overstaying a tourist visa or by crossing the border). I love my life here, I love the history of this country... you know why? Because it's a country of immigrants, built by people from all over the world (English, Dutch, Irish, German, African, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Japanese, Jews, and on and on...) If you don't like it... then go back to wherever your ancestors came from!
-
zeke 05/14/2010 10:19:00 AM
Illegal Mexicans are just upset because their free ride is over (free american medical care, free education, free food WIC, free housing). Time to pay to play just like everyone else.
Maybe the United States should just copy Mexico's immigration laws, oh wait their laws are stricter then the laws in the United States. Guess that means no free ride.

so stop winning if you don't like it leave.

Much ado about nothing. Some federal judge will toss 1070 on the grounds that it is a state law which is preempted by federal law. The judge won't even need to get to whether or not the law is discriminatory.

I'm so happy you are taking a stand against all this mess. However, I wanted to ask you if you could please, please write about how some illegal immigrants have had children in the US and now those children are serving in the military of the US and protecting all these pinches gringos who are wanting to kick illegals out. I read a comment on an Arizona law article that one person commented that all illegals and their children should be sent back to where they belong and that instead we should be supporting the US military. Isn't that ironic? The US military does have individuals born from Illegal immigrants. Well, I hope you get to read my comment. Gracias y espero que te la pases bien este dia. Cuidate :)

Actually, shouldn't all your OCW advertisers and readers be boycotting YOU AND THE OCW? After all, as the subsidiary of an Arizona based business that still chooses to do business in Arizona, you are not truly "good" unless you are willing to pull up your posts and go elsewhere to conduct business.
Indeed the hallmark of a well-organized boycott is to "force" change by impacting everyone, including the poor and those opposed to the new law. Unless you are willing to urge a boycott of your own employer, I think you're a hypocrite. Why should OCW and its parent company be immune from the very boycott you are calling (which, I think, won't really help anyway).

You forgot one shoutout if I may
The cities of Flagstaff and Tucson have voted to sue the state to block this ridiculous legislation. About 500 protesters (that's a big protest for a small town) were in front of the city hall in Flagstaff when the city council voted unanimously to sue the state. We do not like this law and have acted to stop this. Since almost three quarters of our tax revenue comes from tourism we will be hit disproportionately hard by this law. Please remember this if you are considering boycotting Flagstaff or Tucson
-
undecided 05/10/2010 10:56:00 PM
I can relate to both sides of the immigrant issue, but I will never support laws like this because to me they are just fronts for a greater evil tied together with prejudice and discrimination. Yes, illegal immigration might have its drawbacks, but singling out a specific group will only have repercussions. There has to be another way.

I am not hispanic or noticibly of "native" American stock so would not expect (but don't find it impossible) that I would be a victim of Arid-zona bigotry but I am deeply offended by this policy. If I wanted to live in a police state, I would have moved to the PRC. SB 1070, brought to you by the same have-their-cakes-and-eat-them-too folks so jealous of infringement on what they perceive to be any of their rights (run rough-shod over the environment, receive gov't services but not have to pay their fair share of the taxes to pay for them, ad nauseum). "..., you know, morons".

RobE 05/10/2010 4:08:00 PM
I just wanted to add that the incident with the Japanese comedienne happened in 2006 and they also accused her of being a Mexican male, not just Mexican.
-
RobE 05/10/2010 3:24:00 PM
Hey Cho, if I were you, I wouldn't be so cocky about this issue.
First, I used to teach in Korea and I had a few of my adult students, all regular company workers, complain of rude the treatment they get when they apply for visas to travel to the U.S.
But check this out:
A well known Japanese comedienne named Haruka Minowa flew into LAX a few years back to do a location shoot for a tv program she was appearing on. She was accompanied by a tv crew. One of the immigration officers sussed her and interrogated her for a couple of hours, accusing her of being a Mexican. This is despite the fact that 1) She had a valid Japanese passport, and 2) She had a freaking fully kitted out tv crew waiting for her. Another male officer strip searched her and threatened to deport her to Mexico. They eventually let her go, but only after giving her the parting shot of, "you should try to look more feminine."
Minowa, who is half of the comedic duo Hari Senbon (1000 Needles), recounted this on a tv show hosted by another comedic duo, Downtown, saying that she will never go back to the U.S. ever after that experience. If you can read Japanese, here is a link to her Wiki entry:
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%AE%95%E8%BC%AA%E3%81%AF%E3%82%8B%E3%81%8B
Anywhere, you are going to run across officers who don't know an Asian from a hispanic. This story was about the conduct of U.S. immigration, not some local PD. Now who do you think should have more of a clue? So when even U.S. immigration officer can't distinguish a Japanese with a Japanese passport only speaking Japanese from a Mexican you and every other non-white should be concerned about SB 1070.
But hey, I can't stop you from living in your own little world. Maybe a billy club upside your head from one of Arpaio's boys will wake you up.
-
Quico 05/10/2010 2:49:00 AM
Not so fast Cho...I speak Spanish, French, Greek, Italian, & Japanese. I learned much of it on the streets and of course, I'm an excellent student! One of the best ways for English speakers to learn another language is hear it spoken. I'm delighted to read that you speak English. Do your parents have an accent, if so please ask them to get rid of it because it is offensive!
As for excuses, you're the poor excuse. Let me suggest that you consider visiting the Museum of Tolerance and speaking with Rabbi Meir.
Also, if you're unhappy with immigrants speaking a language other than English in the US, go back to Korea. Take your mother, fathers, sisters, brothers, and all your rice eating relatives with you...creep!
Your excuses for being a creep...totally unacceptable! adios pinche...
-
steve cho 05/10/2010 12:06:00 AM
How effective do you think a boycott will be when arizona laughs at all the californians when they don't have water or electricity?
And as far as supporting any group that has a name that isn't even in English, that is the problem. United States = English. Speak your mother language at home. I moved to America as a boy from Korea and we were brought up with the mind set of, we are in this country and we speak this countries language and we speak Korean at home.
I think that is part of the reason Spanish speaking groups are looked down upon so heavily. Come on Spanish and English even have mostly the same alphabet. I learned English and in Korea we have totally different characters. Its time to stop making excuses.

Gustavo, as soon as I heard of these boycott attempts I stopped taking my family to Mexican restaurants, stopped buying Calif. produce, etc. I LOVE Mexican food (lived there two years), but I wii support Ariz. this way. People taking your position spread untruths about the law, and you offer no solution. You say Illegals just want to work, then you claim they don't take American jobs! How is that possible? I do construction work, and our legal Hispanics HATE the Illegals, because they'll work for less (ain't paying no taxes) and they let their crew boss do ANYTHING to them, so bosses want illegals and won't hire Union. This applies to our Irish and Polish Illegals too, not just Hispanics. I'm with a Union crew - we follow safety rules, do good work, and pay attention to chemical disposal. Illegals just dump chemicals 'whereever', use whatever unsafe broken tools their boss has, and I've watched them actually build a cooking fire in the middle of a new construction because they don't know any better! Illegals drive down wages, destroy workers' bargaining positions with management, and have absolutely GUTTED the gains in worker health and safety we've fought for for the last two hundred years. Maybe YOU get something out of supporting ILLEGALS, but for the WORKING MAN, they are a disaster, just another slave for management to exploit. I'm sorry I ever supported Obama or the Democratic Party, and I won't make that mistake again - they're sucking around for Hispanic votes and they don't care what's good for anyone but themselves. They (and you) are wrong, though, if they think working people are in favor of Amnesty for Illegals. Send them the eff BACK!
-
Gino 05/08/2010 8:51:00 PM
Why are these discussions never about the lawbreakers who hire los trajabadores sin documentacion? When Arpayasshole brags about the businesses he raids and the workers he cuffs and leads off to jail, there is never a mention that the perp at the head of the line is the business owner or manager who hired these folks. How do you provide an irresistable economic motive for others to break immigration laws without being prosecuted for the same thing, yourself? Is that because Repugs and Democorrupts in the ruling classes have built their business models based on sub-survival wages and non-existent worker benefits? Until the day I see a meatpacking processor or sheet-rock contractor headed off to the SuperMax in Florence, CO, for committing the same seditious terrorism that is put on illegal immigrants, I will never accept the hypocrisy of the Minutemen and FAIR. And until I see some consistency in their arguments and political philosophy, I will have to assume they are racist, cowardly sadists who target poor Hispanics merely because the power structure permits them to do so. Consistency is not the hobgoblin of small minds; rather, it is a mark of intellectual integrity and ethical motivation.

Hola Gustavo,
My mother is Italian (specifically Sicilian), and has the dark, olive-hued skin associated with that culture.
Unfortunately, my mother's skin color could also have Arizona law enforcement officials (and other AZ know-nothings) mistakenly assume she's an "illegal"!
Even worse, if she starts rattling off in Italian, they'll think she's a member of the mafia/mob!
And as if that ain't enough, because Mother lived in North Africa (Tunisia) as a child, and also speaks Arabic....
MAMMA MIA! THOSE AZ KNOW-NOTHINGS ARE GONNA NAIL TERRORISM CHARGES ON HER!! :-O
