Human Rights: Law, Religion and Gender

Irvine Barclay Theatre

Here in the States, we’re entitled to enjoy our fundamental human rights without fear of persecution. However, in other parts of the world, the fight for those rights is an ongoing struggle. Raising awareness and exposing these realities is the goal of the Network of Iranian American Professionals of Orange County (NIPOC), a grass-roots, non-profit, non-political and non-religious organization founded in 1986. This week, Dr. Stephen Kennedy, Dr. Pardis Mahdavi and Dr. Reza Aslan come to the Barclay Theatre to speak to the community about the importance of human rights, to explore the roots of such violations (like the issuance of death sentences to several election protestors last month in Iran), and to demand accountability and access to these rights by law. Because while ignorance may be bliss, it doesn’t do a damn thing to fix the problem.
