Los Ladrones Viejos

Museum of Latin American Art

A criminal with an honorable code of ethics has the unique ability to enable the public to glaze over any illegal activity and instead see the individual as alluring, charming, even heroic. It’s a Robin Hood-like phenomenon that’s clear in the Mexican documentary Los Ladrones Viejos. Here, we meet El Carrizo, the ring-leader of a group of robbers who met towering mountains of success during the 1960s. His code? No snitching. No violence. And only steal from those who can afford to be robbed—like Mexican President Luis Echeverria, a robbery that went smoothly until El Charrizo left behind a damning piece of evidence that ultimately led to his arrest and skyrocket to notorious stardom.
