It’s no accident “bop” has more than one meaning. In the earliest days of America’s greatest indigenous musical genre, “to jazz” meant to fornicate and a “jazzbow” was a ladies’ man. The defining instrument? The saxophone. For everything you ever wanted to know about sax but were afraid to ask, there’s Yorba Linda’s Rob Verdi, who owns more than 100. His pet project features some of the most unusual ever manufactured, from a 6-foot 6-inch contrabass to a tiny sopranino. He’ll play them all, with band mates from his Side Street Strutters Jazzmen on drums (Saddleback College’s Paul Johnson), piano and bass—think Boots Randolph’s “Yakety Sax,” bebop legend Charlie Parker, the slinky “Pink Panther Theme” and Stan Getz’s sultry, sensuous “Girl From Ipanema.”
