Juxtaposing flora, fauna and a lot of sexy bits, “Paper Vernalia: The Sculptural Drawings of Leigh Salgado” brings the work of the LA-based mixed-media artist to Costa Mesa. Salgado painstakingly cuts her works with dastardly precision using X-Acto knives, burns them with tools made for things other than art-making, creates risqué titles, and employs paint and the layering of shadows she creates via negative spaces in her works to find a graceful, formal balance and a witty sense of double-entendre. Opening at the Box Gallery this week and running through the end of April, “Paper Vernalia” combines a bit of the naughty with a serious commitment to style and form.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 11 a.m. Starts: March 25. Continues through April 30, 2010
