Fort Wife won early notice in LA for a line-up that included members of suddenly Sub Popped indie band Avi Buffalo—but anybody good with basic band math could correctly figure that Avi Buffalo would only back a winner. Guitarist/singer Elise Ewoldt comes from the same house-y scene as Avi—and Long Beach stalwarts like Boris Smile—with a spare and dreamy kind of guitar pop that nudges Hope Sandoval a step or two closer to folk lonelies like Sibylle Baier or Vashti Bunyan. Anyone connecting this back through Avi Buffalo won’t be disappointed, but there’s a whole different thing happening here—not that Sub Pop would be wrong if they came politely tip-toeing toward Fort Wife.
