The Beauty Mark Opening Reception

"The Beauty Mark" is a 10 year artistic and musical retrospective of the printmaker and songwriter Joy Shannon of the bands; Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks and the Offering. This show goes through the themes behind 5 albums of music and the artwork that Joy created while recording those songs. A beauty mark was, in western history, a mark that proved a woman to be a witch. It was once a mark- like a disfiguring scar- that crippled a woman from living freely. Joy looks at her own family past and her personal experiences to take terrible, potentially crippling, life experiences and turn what those scars were into things of beauty- or "beauty marks"- manifested as her visual art and music.
