Starpool

Slidebar

Flashback to OC in the ‘90s, and you’d see that ska-punk was big like sliced bread. Sort of. Seeing an opportunity to have a legitimate career, smart bands like No Doubt crossed over to the mainstream while the drug-addled bands like Sublime sadly burned out. The scene inevitably waned in popularity—but judging by the way local band Starpool rocks, shimmies and skanks today, it’s clear they didn’t get the memo. These guys, replete with a full complement of wind instruments, are completely unabashed in what they play, and their sound has an undeniably infectious quality. Singing songs with hand-clap breaks and lyrics about new motivations and inspirations, it’s clear that Starpool doesn’t spend too much time thinking about what the oddsmakers say is cool. And doesn’t doing a thing when nobody else thinks it’s cool make the thing sort of cool as a result? The answer is a big, resounding “who gives a fuck?” Go see Starpool.
