A volume-hungry pioneer of reverb and electrified twang, guitarist Dick Dale—who was raised in Orange County—single-handedly kicked off the surf-rock craze of the early ’60s. Despite battling rectal cancer in recent years and only releasing one album this past decade, Dale still tours with a passion at age 72. It goes without saying he’s best known for his early hit “Misirlou,” later used in Pulp Fiction and sampled by the Black Eyed Peas. But with his trademark Fender Stratocaster and a yen for custom-built amps, Dale crafted wobbly instrumentals that still resemble transmissions from another galaxy. There’s nothing like watching him in action, and at this show, he’ll be “dueling” with his teenage son, guitarist Jimmy Dale.
