It’s a shame if the city of Troy—the legendary site of the Trojan war as depicted in the Iliad—now only conjures images of a mediocre, wannabe blockbuster starring a decidedly uncomfortable-looking Brad Pitt. Because then one might be averse to exhibits like “The Gold of Troy: Ancient Jewelry From the Penn Museum Collection,” which features gold excavated by Heinrich Schliemann (not to be confused with the mail order catalogue guy) back in the 1870s. The Penn Museum’s website tells that Schliemann originally thought his find was proof that the Trojan War actually happened, but the pieces were dated to be from about 1,000 years before a Greek/Trojan skirmish was even possible. Sorry, Schliemann, but at least the jewelry is pretty.
