Big D and the Kids' Table

Detroit Bar

Many OC youths skanked their way through the ‘90s courtesy of the psuedo-reggae stylings of Ska’s third wave. For some, it was a lifestyle replete with funny caps and Oi tattoos. For most, it was simply a blip on the cultural radar screen. The blippers inevitably shed their braces for suits and ties, and the evolved bands went mainstream—à la No Doubt. But of the many bands emptying spit traps back in the day, some have yet to give up the ghost. Among them is Massachusetts’ own Big D and the Kids’ Table. Tearing it up since 1995, they have a sound one would expect: Jerky, off-beat rhythms accompanied by a horn section and puerile lyrics. Yet there are moments when this band proves adept at mashing together disparate influences—think Shirley Ellis, Go! Team and Paul Simon (you heard us). Lord knows, they’ve had enough practice. Now go see how they do it.
