The holidays are a great time to try out cultural events that you might not normally get a chance to experience—with all that family lying around looking for something to do, surely someone will go with you, right? The Oakland-based Ballet Folklorico Mexicano will get themselves a lot closer to the border was a one-night performance of "Navidad en Mexico" at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. It's not ballet as you might stereotypically conceive—it's in the tradition of baile folklorico ("folkloric dance"), bringing together diverse regional styles and tunes from across Mexico, like coastal Caribbean dances, banda and mariachi music from Jalisco and the elaborate skirt-whirling of faldeo. And, yes, it's the holidays, so expect appropriately seasonal Mexican songs and a Christmas processional.
