Spring Awakening

Orange County Center for Performing Arts

To pen a play about teenage sexuality, masturbation, abortion and suicide takes some guts. But to do it in 1890’s Germany? That takes something else entirely. In 1891, Frank Wedekind wrote Spring Awakening, a story about school children dealing with the natural changes of their bodies and the lack of information given to them by their parents. It was immediately banned, and remained so for an entire century. We’re surprised it took so long, but Spring Awakening has now become a multi Tony award-winning, tour-the-country smash hit. It helps, of course, that an impressive rock score by Duncan Sheik was added, as well as a supernaturally talented young cast (including Lea Michele from Glee). It’s a good show for teens and adolescents, but maybe leave your 7-year-old with a babysitter.
