Being a part of perhaps the biggest political scandal to rock the Republican Party usually means impending death to one’s career—unless you’re John W. Dean. When Watergate broke open, the FBI actually referred to Dean as the “master manipulator of the cover-up.” During the trail, the one-time Counsel to the President and White House lawyer admitted to paying Watergate burglars “hush money” and also revealed the existence of Nixon’s enemies list. Though he was convicted of several felonies, Dean’s compliance with the FBI led to a reduced sentence, and, years later, an incredibly lucrative career as an author. Now adamantly critical of the Republican Party, Dean has penned such New York Times Best-sellers as Conservatives Without Conscience and Broken Government: How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches.
