Ancestor worship oughta be everybody’s favorite religion. Don’t like your own folks? Honor whoever’s dead relatives you want to. Día de los Muertos is the ultimate family fun event, with the best local celebration is at Bush and Third streets in old Santa Ana. Sponsored by two great local outfits, El Centro Cultural de Mexico and Calacas, Night of Altars invites families, students, activists and artists to assemble elaborate, funny, thoughtful, beautiful altars in memory of loved ones: Cherished uncles, favorite teachers, local heroes and, of course, Frida, Che and Emiliano. Aztec dancers, folklorico players, sugar skulls, Morrissey fans, local artisans—all you have to pay is your respects. But there’s food for sale, too.
