Because the Night

Guggenheim Gallery

By Annie Wharton

Published on October 29, 2009 at 2:40am

With an exhibition title gleaned from the anthemic Patti Smith song that Bruce Springsteen co-wrote, “Because the Night” at the Guggenheim Gallery at Chapman University examines the sexy and the dark. Los Angeles artist-cum-curator Sabina Ott has amassed an impressive group of 23 artists who employ a variety of media (photo, video, drawing, painting and sculpture) to investigate the nocturnal. Some artists refer to the enigmatic relationship between shadows and light, others depict their personal interpretations of the crepuscule. All play with taboos, imagination and “the mysterious things that happen under the cloak of darkness: magic, dreams, sex, romance, war, murder, ritual, flight and fantasies.”
Mondays-Saturdays, noon. Starts: Oct. 19. Continues through Nov. 3, 2009
