During the past few years, I have sat in courtrooms and watched the “action.” Only growing grass is slower than “justice.” Except when there are public-defender cases. I have yet to see a public defender enter a plea of not guilty for low-income clients. I can understand why some other attorneys refer to them as “public pretenders.”

The reason why public defenders do not choose their clients is because they believe everyone accused of a crime is entitled to a defense—because the Constitution protects everyone.

OF DOUCHEBAGS AND DEDUCTIBLES
Maybe this is farfetched and all [Gustavo Arellano’s ¡Ask a Mexican! Oct. 16], but wouldn’t it be a good idea to let illegal immigrants get driver’s licenses and insurance? That way, if they hit you or you hit them, you’re both covered (unless you don’t have insurance, even though you are allowed to).

Every time someone comes out with a pendejada like, “Hmm, is it a cultural thing and ignorance thing, or what?”—I can’t help but laugh at their ignorance. Come on, gente, a cultural thing would be to eat tortillas and beans every day and plant corn in your back yard, or have the Virgin sticker on your rear window; to drive with no insurance (which is hard to do because the DMV will suspend your registration) is to be poor and uneducated. What I realized from reading this type of stuff, Gustavo, is that most gente don’t realize that social status divides more than ethnicity or race. I used to think that the gringos were all that, but after being here for a couple of years, I realized we are all the same screwed-up human race.

I must say, you Californians have the nicest bigots. And they word it so wonderfully. I will have to inform some people here to stop using the word wetback or beaner. Then I can inform them they should use either wab or mojado. Of course, they will think it is something new being served at Taco Bell: “I’ll have a mojado wab with no beans, please.”

Jesus Christ! Santa Ana is a freaking cesspool! I mean, all those filthy Mexican immigrants just irk me to no avail! Never thought I would say that as a lifelong resident, but the reality is, this city is a dump, and only the dirty Mexicans are to blame (well, not all of them, but most of them)!

Pendejo, even by your algodon-headed logic, the response about the uninsured wet was pathetic. I’m sure you can find some (bogus) statistics from the NCLR [National Council of La Raza] that have at least passing relevance to the writer’s concern. You can’t, on the other hand, deny the sky-high rates of DUI among your brown brothers. No, the masses of bo-raza-chos on our roads kill scores every year and cause millions in damage. Immigration of indios and cholos has been a disaster for our state and the nation.

I made that argument all the time here in Dallas back in October 2008, when DPS [Texas’s Department of Public Safety] started asking for green cards or birth certificates before issuing a driver’s license. Don’t cry, bigots, when you get crashed into and the guy doesn’t have insurance because he doesn’t have a driver’s license. It’s pretty cool for the insurance companies; they get to raise rates across the board. I love it when bigots shoot themselves in the feet.

MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS SNIVELERS
Maybe he brought it all back [Hey, You! “You’re Such a Member!” Oct. 16] because the appliances many of us bought in the 1970s, which used to last 30-plus years, now hardly last the one year of the applied warranty (if you are lucky). I just bought a new toaster from Costco that worked for a month. I just wish every retailer took back all of the worthless Chinese-made junk with no hassle like Costco does. Quality in America is job NONE!
