Forbidden ZoneLong Beach Art TheatreBy NATE JACKSONPublished on October 06, 2009 at 2:40amAs far as kooky, outer-space art films go, the opening line of the trailer for Richard Elfmans The Forbidden Zone (1980) pretty much says it all: Just keep telling yourself that its only a movie. Originally inspired by the outrageous, avant-garde stage performances of the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo (who would later drop the Mystic Knights part and collectively decide to start a band), this comedic clusterfuck of off-the-wall imagery and storytelling has a history that bleeds into indie art culture to this very day. This Saturday, the Art Theatre of Long Beach is hosting a screening of the beloved cult classic starring the late, pint-sized actor Hervé Villechaize (remember Tattoo from Fantasy Island ?) and a host of other colorful characters (Danny Elfman as Satan!).
