Kid Koala

Detroit Bar

By CHRIS ZIEGLER

Published on September 25, 2009 at 2:40am

Turntablist Kid Koala’s newest project, Slew, is loud and rowdy and ready to scream—born on a mountain, raised in a cave, as the old biker slogan goes. As Slew, Koala splashes deep into ‘70s scuzz-rock—those old LPs with Frazetta art, positively venereal guitar solos and never enough shirts to go around in the band photos—with live accompaniment from Wolfmother’s ex-rhythm section. It’s Parliament plus Deltron—drooling psych and snap-precise drums plus Koala’s six turntables making pits and scratches over the whole thing. Detroit gets the Slew DJ set while LA gets the full band, but if it’s anything like the album, that’ll still be plenty.
