Exene Cervenka and John Doe

Alex's Bar

Exene Cervenka’s writing in X and beyond helped define what LA would become and preserve what it used to be, and her new solo album, Somewhere Gone (to be released Oct. 6 on Bloodshot), finds her sharp and sad (“You can have what’s left of my forever”) on songs that spin from rousing honky-tonk (“Walk Me Across the Night”) to Carter Family traditionalism (“The Willow Tree,” in fine lonesome form) and punk unplugged (“Fevered Paper,” where “it was just a dream/we aren’t under attack”). At a small show like this, you’ll hear her even more clearly—sharing the stage with John Doe, whom she says is still the best she’s ever danced with.
