Exene Cervenkas writing in X and beyond helped define what LA would become and preserve what it used to be, and her new solo album, Somewhere Gone (to be released Oct. 6 on Bloodshot), finds her sharp and sad (You can have whats left of my forever) on songs that spin from rousing honky-tonk (Walk Me Across the Night) to Carter Family traditionalism (The Willow Tree, in fine lonesome form) and punk unplugged (Fevered Paper, where it was just a dream/we arent under attack). At a small show like this, youll hear her even more clearlysharing the stage with John Doe, whom she says is still the best shes ever danced with.
