Depeche Mode—French for “there eez no such thing as new wave”—got started thanks to interest from the man behind the Normal’s “Warm Leatherette” and got huge thanks to a thousand personal ads promising responders their own personal Jesus. Dave Gahan set (or at least met) the bar for declamation over burping synth, and el Mode (despite some hiccups of their own) have endured long enough that they now get to watch their ill-formed copycatters (el Killers) arrange stadium tours of their own. So this year, Depeche Mode set out on a stadium tour of their own—to conquer the land they discovered in the first place.
